Stromlo Leisure Centre sets new standard for swim teacher safety with Safe Holds training rollout
Safety is at the heart of everything we do at Stromlo Leisure Centre. To further support this commitment, our swim teachers are undertaking specialised training in Safe Holds and Support Techniques over the coming months.
Building on our strong safety practices, this training equips our team with the skills and confidence to support students safely in the water. It ensures each lesson is delivered with care, consistency and a clear focus on reducing risk while improving outcomes for both students and teachers.
The training has been developed with guidance from leading industry organisations including AUSTSWIM, Swim Coaches & Teachers Australia and Child Safe Australia, ensuring it reflects best practice in aquatic education and child safety.
Our Venue Manager, Samer Kamal said, “With around 3,800 kids enrolled, Safe Holds supports our teachers to deliver high-quality lessons while keeping every child safe, confident and supported.”

This comprehensive program includes interactive e-learning, practical resources and visual guides to help our teachers apply techniques effectively in real lesson settings. Early feedback from participants has been very positive, with teachers highlighting how clear and practical the training is, and how it strengthens their confidence in the water.
At Stromlo, we know that swimming lessons are about more than learning a skill, they’re about building trust. Families place their confidence in us every time they step into our centre, and we take that responsibility seriously.
This training reinforces our commitment to creating a safe, supportive and welcoming environment where every child can build water confidence, learn essential life skills and feel secure while doing so.
We remain dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of safety and care for our community.
